History

For nearly 30 years, IAR Systems has gained the confidence of programmers all over the world. Our software has been vital to the development of tens of thousands of new products across most industries.

IAR Systems was founded in 1983 out of passion for embedded programming. The founder, Anders Rundgren, is the man behind the brand. “IAR” is an abbreviation of Ingenjörsfirman Anders Rundgren, which means Anders Rundgren Engineering Company.

As a technical pioneer, IAR Systems launched the world’s first C compiler for the 8051 microprocessor in the 1980s. Based on its instant success, we developed several new C compilers to a growing user base of programmers in Sweden and in other countries. To support our growth, we opened offices in the UK and Germany.

Switching from assembler language to C enabled embedded engineers to add complexity and functionality, and speed up the development of new products. This called for high-level programming languages. We know a lot about this as we have developed more C and C++ compilers than any other company in the embedded industry.

In 1993, we established our first office in the US in San Francisco, which has been followed by offices in technical hubs in Boston and Dallas. We have also extended our reach in Asia by opening an office in Japan in 2001, and in China a few years later.

We launched the first version of IAR Embedded Workbench to programmers’ worldwide in 1994. Since then, we have incorporated the knowledge and experiences of its over 100,000 users and many partners, as we have continued to release new versions. In recent years, we have extended our network of partners, such as chips vendors and providers of real time operating systems. Recent product launches include our power debugging technology in 2010. We support the market’s widest range of chips and chip architectures and we are dedicated to continue to do so.

IAR Systems has grown from a local Swedish company, to an international software vendor with over 14,000 customers in all industries. Together with our partners, we have accumulated a unique understanding of software engineering for embedded systems. We continue to develop our software based on our belief that professional developers deserve professional tools.
