Easy migration from 8-bit to 32-bit architectures has been a central theme at IAR Systems for several years now. With the release of IAR Embedded Workbench for S08 last month, IAR Systems now offers a comprehensive suite of development tools for the entire Flexis series of microcontrollers, the 8-bit to 32-bit Freescale Controller Continuum. The portfolio includes IAR Embedded Workbench for ColdFire, IAR PowerPac for ColdFire, IAR visualSTATE and IAR Embedded Workbench for S08, with support for new HCS08 devices from Freescale.
There are several interesting news regarding ARM products. IAR Embedded Workbench V5.20 for ARM has been released with new speed optimizations and IAR PowerPac V2.20 for ARM includes board support packages for several new ARM devices. There is also a brand new LPC2468 Industrial Reference Design announced today together with NXP.
Many new IAR KickStart Kit products will from now on contain an additional software product, µC/Probe from Micrium. In his article Debugging Dynamic Systems: See Inside the Box!, Jean Labrosse of Micrium explains how µC/Probe can facilitate application-level debugging of complex applications.

| Debugging Dynamic Systems: See Inside the Box! |
Many years ago, I designed a control system for industrial engines that were used to drive compressors. The engine/compressor was used to pump natural gas through a pipeline to provide natural gas to heat home in colder states. A portion of the natural gas being pumped was actually used to fuel the engine. Many such engines/compressors were needed every hundred miles or so to maintain gas flow because of friction losses in the pipeline.
