Welcome to e-News from IAR Systems
The focus this month is on wireless technology. Ember Corporation has recently launched their new ARM Cortex-M3 development platforms with IAR Embedded Workbench for smart metering and home automation applications. You will also find an overview of different RF communication protocols for low-power wireless systems. And don't forget to check out the next online seminar—Getting started with RF4CE: Low-Power RF for Consumer Electronics.

Small, smaller, smallest—RF communication protocols for low-power wireless systems
With the ability to connect up to 65,000 nodes in a network, the ZigBee® protocol is naturally an attractive choice for multi node low-power wireless systems—battery-operated systems that communicate over a short or long distance via a radio frequency. But there are alternatives. This article tries to explain how IEEE 802.15.4, ZigBee and other protocols relate to each other.

Ember: ZigBee Wireless Mesh Networking Systems—Chips, Software, Tools
Various stakeholders want electricity to be used more efficiently in terms of saving energy, reducing costs and preserving the natural environment. Prices go up when supply is short, so turning down air conditioners and other appliances during peak demand saves money for electricity consumers; power generation and distribution need not be pushed to the limits, and demand can be balanced with supply. That’s where wireless technology enters the picture: it plays a key role when it comes to enabling real time, 2-way communication between the utilities and consumers to better manage available energy resources.
