Introduction

This Technical Note applies to legacy versions of IAR Embedded Workbench.

Issue

The Windows system crashes with a "blue screen" when the laptop is docked to and/or undocked from the docking station.

Solution applies to

This text is applicable for products using SafeNet SuperPro (a.k.a. Sentinel, Rainbow) USB-hardware locks.

Solution

The workaround include cleaning the system, installing the latest dongle drivers and disabling the parallel part of the dongle drivers.

  • Uninstall the current Sentinel System driver through Add/Remove programs in control Panel. (Typical name is "Sentinel protection installer".) Note that all such packages must be removed.
  • Clean the system using the cleanup utility (download: Cleaner from SafeNet.zip).
  • Restart the computer.
  • Download the dongle drivers, from SafeNet, that of verion 7.4.0 or later.
  • Install the dongle drivers.
  • Restart the computer.
(Please note that some users have reported that the Sentinel Installer crashes at this reboot.)
  • Change the parallel port setting in the driver as follows:
    • Locate SetupSysDriver.exe in the folder C:\Program Files\Common Files\SafeNet Sentinel\Sentinel System Driver\
    • Start the SetupSysDriver.exe application.
    • Click on the "Stop NT Parallel Driver"-button. (The message box for "Installed Driver version" will show the message: "Version not detected!".)
    • Click on the "Configure Driver"-button. If there is a line for the parallel port,
...then perform the next 4 points:
      ...otherwise continue below these points.
      • Click on the line with the parallel port section
      • Click on the "Edit"-button.
      • Select the radio-button "No" to "Use this port?"
      • Press "OK"-button (closes first dialog), and again press "OK"-button (closes second dialog).
    • In the main window of SetupSysDriver.exe, click on the "Start NT Parallel Driver"-button.
    • Exit the SetupSysDriver.exe.
  • Restart the computer
  • The IAR Embedded Workbench tools are now ready for using.

Possible remaining issue

The workspace and/or project might have become corrupted by the hard crash. If such issues occur then apply the following suggestions, (or fetch a back-up from you back-up-system.)

Solution for incorrect workspace

  • Close IAR Embedded Workbench.
  • Search for the directory where the Project File is present. From that directory delete the folder Settings and open the workspace again.
  • If the project works as intended then everything is OK, if not continue...
  • Close IAR Embedded Workbench.
  • From the project directory delete the folder Debug and the folder Release and open the workspace again.
  • If the project works as intended then everything is OK, if not continue...
  • Close IAR Embedded Workbench.
  • From the project directory delete the file with extension .ewd (please note, not extension .ewp) which holds some settings for the debugger.
  • If the project works as intended then it is OK. Note the need to set up the options for the debugger again. If the project does not work then continue...
  • Close IAR Embedded Workbench.
  • Fetch the project from your company back-up system. Please note that the present (from the crashed project) source files can be used, by adding these files to the back-up project.
