Component:
IDE

Updated:

Introduction

Sometimes the IDE can't be started, and this technical note focuses on some reasons for this issue to occur.

Messages

The IDE gives messages similar to the below examples:

"The application failed to start because..."
"...Configuration incorrect"

<Installation PATH>\common\bin\IarIdePm.exe
The application failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

"...side-by-side configuration incorrect"

<Installation PATH>\common\bin\IarIdePm.exe
The application failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.

Solution 1

Download and run the 2008 file vcredist_x86.exe (for a 32-bit OS) or vcredist_x64.exe (for a 64-bit OS).

Solution 2

Some versions of the IDE needs to use the 2005 package. So if the above doesn't help then follow the link to the 2005 package. Download from that web page the correct package for your computer and run that installer.

Background

IAR Embedded Workbench needs (in order to work) to have the
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package
or the
Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package ATL Security Update
installed on the computer.

Other information

When the Microsoft package is missing/incorrect also other problems can show up. Examples of such problems can be found in technical note 21536.
