Wanted information

There is a need to determine the peak usage for a license component for a given time period from the log file. This can help determine license usage efficiency. This tech note assumes the user is familiar with generating a log file on the server. If not, please refer to the license guide in your installation directory common\doc\ folder.

Solution

Once you have obtained the logfile.txt from the server, you are going to want to open this in Microsoft Excel. When you first open the log file, Excel will start the text import wizard. You will want to select the delimited file type to import your log file. This will allow you to separate the columns using spaces. Make sure to check “spaces” on the second screen of the import wizard. After opening the log file in excel, you will notice that column “A” contains either a “2” or “#”. Any row that contains a “#” indicates a server startup/shutdown and must be deleted from the file. After this, you will want to organize column “J” alphabetically. This will organize the file in its respective components, thereby allowing you to graph relevant components. The last step is to graph the data. The column that contains the pertinent data to graph is column “M”. This is the Numkeys field and tells you the total number of licenses that are checked out anytime a license is released or acquired. It is recommended to use Numkeys as your dependent axis. A typical use case might be to determine the max value of M for a given day and graph it against a week. This could help to determine which days of the week you are close to using the maximum number of available licenses.
