Introduction

We have discovered that USB dongles cannot always be found on Windows 10 version 1803. That is a problem with dongled licenses.

Discussion

The message from IAR Embedded Workbench can look like this:

Failed to obtain feature 'ARM.EW.DEBUGGER'

It can also happen during a License Activation.

Missing dongle: The dongle for "Product" (S/N 1234) was not found.

IAR Embedded Workbench

The workaround is to run the IDE in Windows 8 compatibility mode.

  1. Right-click the IAR Embedded Workbench icon on the Windows start menu
  2. Choose More > Open file location
  3. Right-click the IAR Embedded Workbench shortcut
  4. Choose Properties
  5. Open the Compatibility page
  6. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows 8
  7. Click OK

IAR License Manager

Perform the corresponding actions on the LicenseManager.exe icon.

Eclipse

Perform the corresponding actions on the eclipse.exe icon.

Conclusion

This issue has been corrected in IAR Embedded Workbench for Arm version 8.30.1 and newer. For older or other versions of IAR Embedded Workbench, use the workaround. The issue has been acknowledged by our License Management Partner and will be corrected in future releases.
