Introduction

Here follow several suggestions for troubleshooting a USB dongle.

Discussion

When a USB dongle isn’t detected by the computer, a typical message in LMS1 is:

‘No valid license found for this product’.

The following actions can be tried individually, but often it is best to perform them top down.

Action A: Install IAR License Manager 1.29.1 and dongle driver 7.5.2

Make sure to use latest software for LMS1:

  1. Important - disconnect the USB dongle from the PC.
  2. Install IAR License Manager 1.29.1 as described in Technical Note 14255.
  3. Install dongle driver 7.5.2 as described in Technical Note 200922.
  4. Attach the USB dongle.

LMS1 should now detect the USB dongle. If Windows does not detect the dongle, continue with next action.

Action B: Remove and reinstall the dongle driver

Make sure that only the relevant dongle driver (for LMS1) is installed.

  1. Important - disconnect the USB dongle from the PC.
  2. Close all IAR Systems applications, for example IAR Embedded Workbench and IAR License Manager.
  3. Choose Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
  4. Select Sentinel Protection installer.
  5. Click Uninstall.
  6. Important – If there are several items in Add/Remove Programs called Sentinel System Driver, perform Uninstall on ALL of them..
  7. Reinstall the driver, version 7.5.2, as described in Technical Note 200922
  8. Attach the USB dongle.

If Windows does not detect the dongle, continue with next action.

Action C: Change the settings for the dongle driver

Stop the parallel port driver subsystem in the dongle driver.

  1. Important - disconnect the USB dongle from the PC.
  2. Start the application SetupSysDriver.exe located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\SafeNet Sentinel\Sentinel System Driver\ .
  3. Click Stop NT parallel driver.
  4. Save the change.
  5. Close the application.
  6. Attach the USB dongle.

If Windows does not detect the dongle, continue with next action.

Action D: Remove the dongle driver support for parallel port dongles

This action removes the driver subsystem that communicates with parallel port dongles.

  1. Important - disconnect the USB dongle from the PC.
  2. Choose Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Select Sentinel Protection installer 7.5.2.
  4. Click Change.
  5. Click Yes / Next until you get a window with a choice of drivers to install.
  6. Select the disk icon to the left of the phrase Parallel System Driver.
  7. Choose This feature will not be available from the drop-down menu.
  8. Click all Next buttons until the installation application ends.
  9. Attach the USB dongle.

This is the last of the regular remedial actions for LMS1, but there is one final action to try: Check the USB port in the Windows Device Manager. If the USB dongle is shown as an unknown device in the Windows Device Manager, then try Technical Note 67644.

Conclusion

The suggestions above usually establish the connection (for LMS1) to the USB dongle.

If the USB dongle still is not detected, contact IAR Systems Customer Care for assistance. Mention that you have followed the advice in technical notes 62867 and 67644.
